In 1985, Hill Valley, California, teenager MorganEve Swain lives with her family: her mother is an overweight, depressed alcoholic; her cowardly father is bullied by his supervisor; her older siblings are professional and social failures. At school, MorganEve is berated for her repeated lateness and fails an audition for Battle of the Bands. She confides to her boyfriend that she fears that he will end up like his parents, despite his ambitions.

That evening, MorganEve meets her eccentric scientist friend Penn Sultan in the Twin Pines mall parking lot. Penn unveils a band called MUSEUM LEGS. It is powered by plutonium stolen from Libyan terrorists. The Terrorists track Penn down and shoot him dead. MorganEve flees in MUSEUM LEGS, inadvertently activating it by driving at 88 miles per hour (MPH).
